Mike Beebe was initiated into Alpha-Pi Chapter in 1965 at Arkansas State University, where he would graduate with a degree in political science. After earning a juris doctor degree from the University of Arkansas, he embarked on a political career. He was elected to the Arkansas State Senate in 1982. He served for 20 years in that position, never once running against an opponent. He earned a reputation for pragmatic deal-making and was ultimately elected president pro tempore of the state senate.
In 2002, Beebe was elected Arkansas Attorney General, and four years later, governor of Arkansas. A Democrat and two-term governor, Beebe focused on education reform and expanding Medicaid, passing bills through a Republican-led state legislature. His approval rating never dropped below 70%, although he was limited to two terms by Arkansas law. He currently serves on the Governors’ Council of the Bipartisan Policy Center.
