Rolin Rosco James was born in Lincolnville, Indiana, on October 16, 1879, to Robert O. and Mary P. James. He attended Vincennes University, where he was one of the Founders of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He graduated in 1900, then earned a graduate degree at Earlham College in 1902 and studied for a time at Harvard Law School. He was a practicing attorney and member of the Presbyterian Church. He died on February 4, 1953.
