Patterson, George M.

George Martin Patterson was born in Palmyra Township, Knox County, Indiana on November 7, 1877, the son of Robert B. and Nancy (Wise) Patterson. His ancestors had settled in the Vincennes area before Indiana became a state and played a prominent role in the development of Knox County.

After attending Vincennes University, where he helped found Sigma Pi Fraternity, he served as Deputy Recorder of Knox County before becoming a farmer on the family estate of Rose Hill.

Patterson married Mattie Purcell, a sister of the late Lee Purcell (Vincennes 1897) in 1906, with whom he had two children. He died on April 7, 1960.

His residence, Rose Hill, had been in the family for nearly two centuries and handed down through five generations before it was deeded to Sigma Pi in 1989.
