James Thompson Kingsbury was born in Lawrence, Illinois, on January 8, 1877, to Robert W. and Josephine (Thompson) Kingsbury, a descendant of the Kingsbury family that settled in Massachusetts in 1615. He attended Vincennes University, where he helped found Sigma Pi Fraternity, and graduated in 1897. He earned a bachelor of arts from Illinois and then an undergraduate law degree in 1902. He practiced law in Bisbee, Arizona, where he was a member of the Christian Church and of Masonic Lodges in Tombstone and Phoenix, Arizona.
Kingsbury married Grace Hicks in 1912, with whom he had three children. He died on October 1, 1950.
